Saturday 27 August and Sunday 28 August

Description: Welcome to the first moment of Tempo: Te Rerenga o Tere in 2022 for a celebration of dance, movement and film. A collection of installations of dance film and live elements will be presented each afternoon in spaces throughout Studio One Toi Tū featuring artists Nalia Wilde, Holly Finch, Suzanne Cowan, Amber Liberté and Dance Plant Collective. This event energises on-screen dance by connecting with a live audience. Join us in exploring the ways that dance film can take on new life in physical spaces.

The works in the event explore themes of perception, reflection, celebration of the present, surrealist reimaginings of a life-changing moment, interconnected relationships with the land, and rituals of healing, grief and loss.

HOLLY FINCH - LENSES

The noise and stimulation.

The age of misinformation.

The filter,

that controls the spotlight,

that controls the narrative.

Lies dressed up as truth.

Conflicting truths.

A growing perspective,

a growing unknown.

How can we be discerning?

Sunday 28 August, 12noon - 5pm

NALIA WILDE - blut

Description: blut [blood]: an intuitive ritual of healing; a deep-dive into the murky canals of matrilineal shadows, grief and loss, re-emerging in the radiant spring of yonic resilience. blut seeks to hold its participants and witnesses in a bosom-y embrace, remembering and celebrating that not one of us arrived here without a womb. blut calls upon blood as a vital life force: bloodlines of scattered ancestry; the cycles of death and rebirth; bloodshed across continents - and in utero - fertilizing the soil of mama earth papatūānuku; gentle streams and devastating floods; veins, tears, sweat and saliva; purification and purging; baptismal rites and wrongs; amniotic fluid, menstrual rivers and milky oceans…

The Womb Circle, under the Virgo New Moon, is an invitation for all genders to join in an intimate sharing space. The intention is to connect with and celebrate the energy of the bodily space in which we all grew and began our lives - the womb - birthing the energies of fluidity, creativity and a sense of homeliness and safety. The Womb Circle is a space to witness and be witnessed with one another. It will be intuitively co-facilitated by Nalia Wilde, the collaborators for blut, and the circle participants.

Please note: (blut) contains themes around pregnancy loss and depictions of nudity, blood and self-harm and is not suitable for an under-16 audience. Access will be restricted to the relevant areas and clearly signposted.

Saturday 27 August (installation), 2pm - 4.30pm.
‘Womb Circle’ 4.30pm – 6:30pm (Numbers restricted).

Sunday 28 August, 12noon - 5pm with dance and taonga pūoro (traditional Maori music) performed throughout that time.

AMBER LIBERTÉ - THE HORIZON IS EVER PRESENT

Description: The Horizon Is Ever Present celebrates our surroundings, reminds us to have moments of presence, and offers a space to be grateful for nature’s vastness and timelessness. The work is a performance and digital installation (via Instagram), and subverts the myth of Narcissus - instead of passers by becoming self-obsessed with their bodies, they are given a space to become obsessed with our horizons, architecture, and framed real life.

Saturday 27 August, 2.30pm - 3.30pm
Break, then 4pm - 5pm

Sunday 28 August, 12.30pm to 13.30pm
Break, then 2pm - 3pm

SUZANNE COWAN - SLIPPAGE

Description: Slippage reimagines a pivotal journey in the artist’s life where a road trip changed her life forever. Her body is inextricably linked with the landscape as it becomes the site of transformation both in her bodily form and bodily aesthetic. Archival photographic images burst into new life as this mythical road trip pushes the boundaries of time and space. Slippage is a conversation about movement and stillness and what it means to re-embody a time passed. It questions whether we ever leave our experiences behind or are they re-membered and embedded within our cellular memory? Slippage was inspired by Suzanne Cowan’s stage show “Manifesto of a Good Cripple” which was performed at the Basement Theatre in Auckland in 2019. The autobiographical show traversed the performance career of a disabled dancer/choreographer, Suzanne Cowan. Slippage incorporates creative elements of the show and reimagines them in a surrealist landscape. It is a collaboration with Owen McCarthy as Director of Photography/Editor, Charlie Ha as Composer, creative advice from Alyx Duncan and with production and technical support from Carol Harding and Calvin Hudson. The film is produced, performed and choreographed by Cowan. A central theme of ‘Slippage’ is the ability to emerge from a life-changing event and re-write our own story. It contemplates our sense of place, immersion and connection to our environment. This film is a far-reaching exploration of identity.
