TEMPO DANCE FESTIVAL TE RERENGA O TERE 2024
Hōtaka Tūmatanui—Public Programme
11 - 15 October 2024
Strand Arcade, Myers park, Wellesley STudios
The public programme unfolded across the city as an open invitation, drawing dance beyond the theatre and into the shared spaces of Tāmaki Makaurau.
Anchored within the Strand Arcade and extending through the surrounding city, the programme activated streets, shopfronts, and passageways with movement, sound, and encounter. Audiences were invited not only to witness, but to participate, whether through guided processions, performance installations, or practices of care and wellbeing.
Works such as Hine Downtown carried participants through the urban landscape in a collective journey shaped by sound and story, while A Rosegarden transformed the arcade into a site of reflection, memory, and live performance. Alongside these, the hauora programme offered space for rest, healing, and reconnection through a range of embodied practices.
More than 200 people engaged directly with the programme, with many others encountering it in passing, drawn into moments of curiosity, pause, and discovery.
What emerged was a renewed sense of the city as a living stage, where dance met everyday life, and where place, people, and movement were brought into relationship. Through these activations, the public programme contributed to a more open, accessible, and connected experience of dance, inviting new audiences into the rhythm of the festival.

WED 16 OCT, FROM 7:30PM
VENUE:
Strand Arcade
227 Queen Street, Auckland CBD
SCHEDULE:
Created and performed by Claire O’Neil, Kristian Larsen, Zahra Killean-Chance, Rachel Ruckstuhl-Mann, Brittany Kohler, Aloali'i Manley-Tapu, Clare Luiten, Peter Daubé, Rachel Derham & Christina Houghton. Film performers are Adam Boonprakob-Naughton & Forest Kapo.
An evening processional performance installation in Auckland’s oldest arcade, The Strand on Queen Street. Exploring decaying choreographies of promises made and broken, haunting themes of abandonment and care, and vanishing portrayals of presence, integrity and beauty, A Rosegarden, curated by choreographer Claire O’Neil in collaboration with movement and sound artist Kristian Larsen, untethers a gentle chaos of energies and forms of old and new, making disappearing promises about the future from the past.
