TEMPO DANCE FESTIVAL TE RERENGA O TERE 2024
Pōwhiri — Festival Opening
10 October 2024
Q Theatre
That evening, the festival was formally opened with a pōwhiri at Q Theatre, led by the whānau of Ngāti Whātua. The space was brought into alignment through a powerful welcome, drawing artists, audiences, and extended whānau into a shared beginning.
Welcoming remarks were offered by Aaron Huata, Executive Director of New Zealand Dance Festival Trust, and Moss Te Ururangi Patterson, Guest Artistic Director for Tempo Dance Festival, acknowledging the gathering and setting the tone for the days ahead. The room carried a sense of anticipation, as those present came together not only as observers, but as part of a collective moment.
The pōwhiri closed with Tūtira Mai Ngā Iwi, a waiata that moved through the space with warmth and unity. Its presence held particular resonance, carrying a familial connection that deepened the moment, as voices joined in a shared expression of togetherness.
